What is a wiki? (Click here to watch a video on how teachers use wikis.) First and foremost, a wiki is a website shared by a group of people who want to collaborate. In a university setting, the purpose of collaboration may include:
- Sharing curricula, materials, resources, and strategies for common courses we teach
- Working on common research interests
- Professional development around shared learning goals
- Management of group projects or committee work
- Communication and/or collaboration with students
- Sharing research/presentations with the professional community
At the Classroom 2.0 site, Mary Bogan posed the question, "How do you use blogs, wikis, etc., in your postsecondary setting?" Interestingly, many undergraduate and graduate students responded to her inquiry, suggesting that the wikis they were using in their university courses were impacting their learning in positive ways. One university professor, Jay Fogleman, shared information about how he used private wiki workspaces to promote learning within his undergraduate education courses. However, he also described a public wiki where student work was migrated once it was ready to be published. Fogleman and his colleagues published their research on using wikis to support authentic, project-based learning in a wiki they shared at the 2010 EduCause conference.
