Learning with Cartoons

Page history last edited by Ellen Maddin 8 years ago

Should learning be fun?  We know that lesson design should always begin with academic standards and learning objectives.  There's too little time and too much curriculum to waste even a class period on an activity that's chosen simply because it's fun. But the question is, "Can we find ways to engage learners in serious academic content while they are also having fun?"  You can call it "head fake" if you like.  Not every student needs to be tricked into learning, but quite a few of them do.  One way to motivate reluctant learners is to give them a creative outlet for constructing meaning.  Bitstrips for Schools shows potential for doing just that.  Below is an example of a Bitstrips cartoon I authored to get you thinking about the possibilities.

With Bitstrips for Schools, you can set up a class and create your teacher avatar.  (You can see my avatar below.)  The tool has a library of lesson ideas, and teachers can contribute their ideas to the Bitstrips community.  Students can share their work in a protected environment.  They can collaborate on projects or work independently.  Learners engage in peer review and provide feedback.  Everything students create is original art because they design their avatars, write the story script, and work with objects to design scenes.

Cartoon-Making Tools for Teachers and Students

Chogger is free for students and teachers.  You can create an account or publish your cartoon anonymously.  Here are the steps for creating a cartoon in Chogger:

  1. Click on the “Build a Comic Now” (top left of the screen).
  2. Choose a layout for your comic.
  3. Use the left side of the creator to add images by searching Google. You can also draw a picture, take a photo or upload an image.
  4. Edit the image with the tools to the left of the creator.  When you are finished editing, click “Add Image.”
  5. Drag and drop the image to the desired location to add it to the comic.
  6. Add text to your comic by clicking on the text bubble at the top left of the screen. Choose the type of balloon/box you would like to add; then drag and drop it into the frame.  (You can resize, format, and edit the text within the balloon after you place it.)
  7. Edit the layout or add a new panel to your comic by clicking the windowpane icon to the top left of the screen.
  8. Repeat the process of adding text and images until you are satisfied with your cartoon.
  9. Click the green “Finish” button to the top right of the screen.
  10. Give your comic a title, description, hover text, and tags if you’d like.
  11. Click “Publish Comic”. Chogger will provide you with a link to your comic.
